Tetragonia tetragonioides – Warrigal Greens (Native Spinach)

Description:
A hardy, fast-growing Australian native perennial groundcover with spreading, trailing stems and attractive fleshy, triangular green leaves. Commonly found in coastal areas, dunes, saltmarsh margins, and disturbed environments, it is naturally adapted to sandy soils, salt exposure, and dry conditions. Warrigal Greens is highly valued as an edible bush food, with its nutritious leaves traditionally used as a leafy vegetable and cooked as a substitute for spinach. The leaves should be blanched or cooked and the cooking water discarded to reduce oxalate content. Its dense, spreading growth provides effective groundcover, helps suppress weeds, and protects exposed soils from erosion. Its tolerance of coastal conditions, moderate drought, and poor soils makes it particularly useful for edible native gardens, coastal revegetation, sustainable food production, and low-maintenance landscapes.

🌳 Height:
0.2–0.5 m

🌿 Width:
1–2 m spread, occasionally wider in favourable conditions

🔧 Uses:

  • Edible leafy vegetable and traditional bush food
  • Native spinach substitute for cooking
  • Sustainable food production and edible landscaping
  • Groundcover and weed suppression
  • Coastal revegetation and rehabilitation
  • Erosion control and soil stabilisation
  • Wildlife habitat and shelter for small insects
  • Native kitchen gardens and permaculture systems
  • Suitable for raised beds and container growing
  • Low-maintenance native landscaping
  • Living mulch beneath larger plants

🌱 Ideal growing conditions:

  • Well-drained sandy, loamy, or light clay soils
  • Full sun to partial shade
  • Low to moderate soil fertility
  • Moderate moisture for vigorous leafy growth
  • Coastal, temperate, and subtropical environments
  • Sandy dunes, coastal gardens, and sheltered inland sites
  • Regular harvesting to encourage fresh growth

💪 Tolerates:

  • Drought and dry periods once established
  • Saline soils and coastal salt spray
  • Sandy and nutrient-poor soils
  • Heat
  • Wind and exposed coastal conditions
  • Partial shade
  • Light frost, although foliage may be damaged
  • Periodic dry conditions
  • Coastal exposure

💧 Drought hardy:
High — drought tolerant once established, particularly in coastal and sandy environments, although regular moisture encourages vigorous growth and tender edible leaves

❄️ Frost tolerant:
Low to moderate — tolerates occasional light frost but foliage can be damaged by prolonged or severe frost; may die back and regrow in warmer conditions

🧂 Salt tolerant:
Very high — naturally adapted to coastal environments, saline soils, and salt spray, making it particularly suitable for coastal landscaping and salt-affected sites

🥬 Edible value:
Very high — produces nutritious, edible green leaves that can be harvested regularly and used as a cooked spinach substitute. Leaves contain vitamins and minerals but also naturally occurring oxalates, so blanching and discarding the cooking water is recommended before consumption. Particularly valuable for native bush food gardens, edible landscapes, and small-scale food production.

🌊 Coastal tolerance:
Very high — thrives in coastal environments and is well adapted to sandy soils, salt spray, and exposed seaside conditions
